City of Tallahassee Launches Landlord Risk Mitigation Fund
Fund Supports Landlords Who Partner to Provide Housing Stability
January 28, 2021
Today, Jan. 28, the City of Tallahassee announced applications are open for landlords to request support from the $250,000 Landlord Risk Mitigation Fund, which was approved by the City Commission last month. The program offers incentives and claims to landlords who agree to partner to provide housing stability for vulnerable and at-risk tenants.
"Housing insecurity is a nationwide issue that has been amplified due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As we work together to address the problem locally, the Landlord Risk Mitigation Fund is one way that we are helping to keep more of our community members in their homes," Mayor John Dailey said.
Eligible landlords must be local, private individuals with five or fewer rental properties in Tallahassee. Landlords may apply if a current tenant has been financially impacted by COVID-19, was previously homeless or is facing eviction. Landlords with vacant units are also encouraged to apply to partner in housing vulnerable tenants. Full eligibility and application requirements and expectations are available at Talgov.com/Landlords.
For participating landlords, the program provides allowable incentives and claims, including a $500 one-time bonus for each unit newly leased to someone exiting homelessness, up to $2,000 in excess of the security deposit to cover a portion of lost rent from a tenant in crisis and up to $1,000 in excess of the security deposit to cover damages beyond normal wear and tear, or for unforeseen expenses, to maintain habitability.
To support participating landlords and their tenant with free assistance for eviction diversion and support services for impacted tenants, the program partners with the Big Bend Continuum of Care, United Partners for Human Services, Legal Services of North Florida, Legal Aid Foundation and other community organizations.
