City Service Changes for New Year’s Day Holiday
December 27, 2017
During the holiday week, all residential solid waste customers will receive service one day later than their regularly scheduled service (see changes below). The New Year’s Day holiday will impact red week customers for bulky item and yard waste pickup.
- Monday customers ► Tuesday, Jan. 2
- Tuesday customers ► Wednesday, Jan. 3
- Wednesday customers ► Thursday, Jan. 4
- Thursday customers ► Friday, Jan. 5
- Friday customers ► Saturday, Jan. 6
To help prevent crime as the holiday season winds down, the City of Tallahassee has set up special cardboard-only receptacles in three community locations. The recycling receptacles are available through Friday, Dec. 29, and are located at the James Messer Sports Complex (2830 Jackson Bluff Road), Tom Brown Park (443 Easterwood Drive) and San Luis Mission Park (131 San Luis Road). Boxes serve as billboards for criminals driving through your neighborhood. Instead of leaving the boxes in front of your home for recycling, simply bring them to the designated cardboard-only receptacles. This will help deter potential break-ins.
Garbage and recycling containers should both be rolled to the curb for pickup by 6:30 a.m. on collection day, with both containers returned to the home no later than the day after collection. Customers are reminded to separate yard waste piles from any bulky items set out for pickup. Customers needing more information may view solid waste schedules at Talgov.com/YOU or contact City of Tallahassee Utilities at 891-4968.

StarMetro fixed routes will operate on a normal Sunday schedule on December 31 with service ceasing at 7 p.m. On Monday, Jan. 1, fixed routes will also operate on a Sunday schedule with service ceasing at 7 p.m.

Animal Service Center Closed Monday
The Animal Service Center (ASC) will close an hour early on New Year’s Eve. Hours of operation on December 31 will be from 1-4 p.m. The ASC is normally closed to the public on Mondays, and thus the facility will be closed on January 1. Normal hours will resume on Tuesday, Jan. 2, with the Center opening at 10:30 a.m. Customers needing more information, including photos of animals available for adoption, may visit Talgov.com/Animals or contact the Animal Service Center at 891-2950.
City Animal Control will be available for emergency situations only on Monday, Jan. 1, and can be reached via the Consolidated Dispatch Agency at 606-5800.
New Year’s Eve festivities can be unnerving for many animals. Here are some tips that will help your pet and you have a safe, enjoyable holiday.
- Keep your pet at home inside a sheltered, quiet area during holiday festivities. Leave a TV on to provide background noise.
- Don’t leave animals chained outside. A frightened animal can become entangled in a chain and get injured or break the chain and flee.
- Make sure your pet is wearing an ID tag and rabies tag (which is required by law). Having your animal microchipped is also an extremely effective means by which to identify them. Contact your family veterinarian or the Animal Service Center for more information about microchipping your pet. If you don't have an ID tag for your pet, you may pick up one for free at the ASC during normal business hours, but you must bring your pet with you! If you lose your pet during the holidays, make sure you check for it at the animal shelter immediately.
