Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Events Announced
January 09, 2018
Across the nation, negative, one-sided rhetoric is easy to find. Locally, efforts to facilitate inclusive, thoughtful discussion can be found at this year’s annual Day of Dialogue event, which is themed “Creating Unity in the Face of Division.” The City of Tallahassee will host this free event on Monday, Jan. 15, from 2-4 p.m. at Cascades Park, 1001 S. Gadsden St.
The Day of Dialogue enables citizens from throughout the community to come together and engage in conversation about human relations. As part of the event, the Tallahassee Human Relations Council will facilitate a roundtable discussion in the park’s Meridian Point Building. At the end of the event, participants will develop a set of action steps to help advance social change in our community and close the gap in achieving Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision of equality for all.
“In Tallahassee, we understand that thoughtful conversations bridge divides and build a stronger community for all,” Mayor Andrew Gillum said. “Events like Day of Dialogue, allow us to engage in open discussions and champion ideas that move us forward together.”
The sixth annual MLK Dare to Dream festival will be held the same day from 12-4 p.m. at Cascades Park. Presented by the Martin Luther King Jr. Dare to Dream Association Inc., the increasingly popular event will feature live music, a variety of specialty item and food vendors, historical exhibits and children’s attractions, such as bounce houses and face painting. Attendees will also be able to take part in the taping of the “I Have a Dream” speech, which will be posted after the event on the City’s YouTube channel.
Prior to the Dare to Dream festival and Day of Dialogue, the NAACP will host its annual MLK Remembrance Walk from 9-10:30 a.m. The walk begins in C.K. Steele Plaza, 111 W. Tennessee St., and ends at the Capitol. For more information about the NAACP events, please contact Adner Marcelin at (850) 284-9880 or naacptallahassee@gmail.com.
