City’s Fire Station #16 Nominated for People’s Choice Award from AIA Florida
July 11, 2017
When the City set out to build the first new fire station in 14 years as part of the state-of-the-art Public Safety Complex, they knew it had to be a showstopper, mixing traditional fire needs with modern advancements. The resulting 11,500 square foot, three story building is Fire Station #16 on Easterwood Drive, which opened for service in 2015.
The building has been selected as a contender for the 2017 People’s Choice Awards from AIA Florida, a Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Your vote will decide the winner. Voting is currently underway and ends on July 28. Cast your vote today and every day through the deadline at http://bit.ly/2sReWmo.
Fire Station #16 was designed by the City’s facilities department. The building was designed using LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards. It features interactive training classrooms, personal sleeping quarters for the firefighters and a solar water heater. Another element that sets the facility apart is its advanced door systems, which provide a quicker exit for the trucks. The station and its cutting-edge features have helped reduce emergency response times for fire and emergency medical calls in eastern Leon County.
The People’s Choice Award is part of AIA Florida’s Honor and Design Awards, which celebrate outstanding achievements in architecture and design. This is the region’s most prestigious awards program for the architectural profession.
