The Tallahassee-Leon Community Animal Service Center (ASC), in partnership with the Animal Shelter Foundation, encourages all animal lovers to visit the ASC this holiday season to select an ornament from the Animal Angel Tree.
The Animal Angel Tree is located in the lobby of the ASC, courtesy of a sponsorship from the Animal Shelter Foundation. The tree has been decorated with animal themed ornaments. A tag attached to each ornament describes an item needed for providing care to the homeless pets at the ASC. When a person selects an ornament to take home and makes a donation based on the cost of the item needed, the donation will be used to purchase that item. Some of the Animal Angel Tree items include:
- Dog and Cat Spays/Neuters, $25 - $50
- Kitten/Puppy Formula, $25
- Dog heartworm treatment sponsor, $100
- Flea Prevention, $10
Last year, the Animal Angel Tree raised more than $6,000. This year, the ASC hopes to exceed that amount. All donations are tax deductible. The tree will remain on display at the ASC through New Year's Day.
This holiday season, members of the community are also encouraged to give to the ASC through Wish List donations. Some of the items needed include:
- Bath towels and blankets (new or gently used)
- Non-clumping cat litter
- Dry dog food (20 to 40 pound bags)
- Canned dog and cat food (pâté style for giving medication)
- Soft training treats for dogs
- Kong dog toys, Nylabones and spray cheese for kennel enrichment programs
- Nebulizers for animals with respiratory illnesses
- Grain-free food and treats for dogs with food allergies
- Used ink cartridges to recycle for cash
Traditionally, fewer animals find homes around this time of year, and many shelters, including the ASC, fill to capacity. While a person's purr-fect pet can come wrapped in any size, shape or color, strangely, black pets often wait longer than lighter-colored animals to be adopted. The ASC aims to change the luck of their darker-colored, four-legged residents by waiving adoption fees on Friday, Dec. 13, from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Be a good luck charm when you adopt a pet from the ASC on Friday the 13th and they'll help to make the season bright for holidays to come.
Potential adopters are encouraged to bring their own leash or cat carrier for transporting their new friend safely home. While the adoption fee is waived, dogs or cats not spayed/neutered at the time of adoption will still require a $50 refundable spay/neuter deposit.
The Animal Service Center, located adjacent to Tom Brown Park at 1125 Easterwood Drive, is operated and maintained by the City's Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Affairs Department.
