'Tis the Season to Give
Join Change for Change to Help Homeless Families
December 18, 2013
This time of the year is often referred to as "the season of giving" and local residents have an opportunity to help give Tallahassee children and their families a considerable gift that is convenient and yet significant. Anyone who receives a City utility bill can sign up for the Change for Change program and help more than 550 children in this community who are homeless.
Adopted by the Commission in 2004, Change for Change is a community program that allows City utility customers to add a monthly contribution on their utility bill that goes directly to helping address and prevent homelessness in Tallahassee.
With a growing number of children and families facing homelessness, the City set a goal earlier this year to increase participation in Change for Change. So far, more than 800 additional customers have joined Change for Change, contributing more than $34,000 in new funding each year to programs such as the Hope Community, America's Second Harvest of the Big Bend and the Capital Area Community Action Agency.
"It is hard to imagine a child without a place to call home, especially during the holidays," said City Commissioner Gil Ziffer, lead commissioner on the Quality of Life target issue committee. "In a community filled with so many compassionate people, we can make a real difference in the lives of families by signing up for Change for Change."
Fueled by the encouragement and support from many compassionate members of the community, efforts to strengthen participation in Change for Change will continue into 2014. City utility customers will soon receive an email about the program, with an opportunity to sign up with just the click of the mouse. The email includes monthly donation options of $1, $2 or $5, or any amount an individual may choose.
Additionally, new utility customers or existing customers transferring their service can also add a monthly contribution to Change for Change on their utility bill when they complete the new utilities or transfer service request forms.
Customers may also sign up for Change for Change by visiting Talgov.com or by calling Your Own Utilities at 891-4YOU (4968). Citizens who wish to give but, are not City utilities customers can mail donations to 408 N Adams St., Tallahassee, FL 32301; Attn: Utility Business & Customer Services - Customer Services Division.
