Jack L. McLean Community Center will host a free co-ed basketball league for teenagers this summer. Hoop Fest!: Re-Loaded gives kids a chance to become familiar with the way organized basketball games are run, learn to compete while simultaneously exhibiting good sportsmanship, and have a blast while doing it all.
After a great turnout for the first Hoop Fest! last year at the Palmer Munroe Teen Center, the league was moved to Jack McLean to accommodate more players, which will further enhance the overall experience.
The league has space for 10 teams of 10 players. To create the teams, Hoop Fest! Re-Loaded has a twist this year. There will be an actual draft similar to that of the National Basketball Association (NBA) on May 12 starting at 6 p.m. During the draft, players and their families will find out who their teammates are by hearing their names called live. Players will then head to the podium for pictures with their new coach. Food will be served during the event.
Hoop Fest! Re-Loaded will also include all-star festivities at midway point of the season that mirror those of the NBA. All-star Saturday, June 28, 2014 will include a skills challenge, three-point shootout and a team shooting challenge. Following those events, the top players from the first half of the season will "hoop it up" against one another in the all-star game. Like all NBA games, the all-star game will begin with the singing of the national anthem. A halftime show will also be performed by some of Tallahassee's most talented teens.
Hoop Fest! Re-Loaded will not only be a basketball league but an overall social experience. A live DJ will keep the crowd rocking to the beat of some of today's most popular hits, while mixing in some old school jams for the parents as they watch their kids give it all they've got on the hardwood. Fan participation will be encouraged with prize giveaways and halftime contests, such as free-throw shooting contests for the parents and a basketball rendition of musical chairs called "basketball chairs."
The deadline to register for Hoop Fest! Re-Loaded is April 30. The season begins on May 20 and lasts 12 weeks (including playoffs and the championship game). In order to sign-up, players must pick up a registration form and liability waiver to be filled out by their parent or guardian at Jack L. McLean Community Center. Registration forms are also available at the Palmer Munroe Teen Center, Walker-Ford Community Center and the Lawrence Gregory Community Center at Dade Street. Please call 891-2505 for more information.
