13th Annual Tails and Trails Race Benefits Shelter Animals - This Saturday and Sunday, Tallahassee Animal Services is offering pet lovers an opportunity to adopt any one of the homeless kittens, puppies, cats or dogs from the shelter for just $13. This weekend-long, reduced adoption fee of $13 is in celebration of the 13th Annual Tails and Trails races taking place on Saturday, May 3.
The Tails and Trails event is hosted by the Animal Shelter Foundation (ASF) and includes both 5K and 10K races, along with a one-mile fun run/walk. The course loops through the scenic trails of Tom Brown Park, beginning and ending at the Tallahassee-Leon Community Animal Service Center (ASC), located at 1125 Easterwood Drive.
Proceeds from this annual event help to provide life-saving support to the homeless animals in the care of Tallahassee Animal Services. Last year, more than 900 people registered for the Tails and Trails races, raising $26,000 to help support ASF programs like the community spay/neuter voucher program to reduce pet overpopulation, supplemental veterinary care for shelter animals and community education on responsible pet ownership.
The entire community is encouraged to come out this Saturday to walk, jog or run, helping to make a difference in the lives of homeless animals. Race registration begins at 7 a.m. The one-mile walk begins at 8 a.m., and the 5K and 10K races begin at 8:30 a.m.
After the races or while you cheer on participants, be sure to take part in the fun activities being offered at the ASC including music, food, booths sponsored by local businesses and kids' activities including a bouncy house. Potential adopters can also enjoy spending time with some of the adorable animals waiting to be adopted.
Event attendees and race participants are asked to please leave their own pets at home so Tallahassee Animal Services can highlight the homeless pets that are still in need of forever homes.
The early registration fee for the Tails and Trails races, available now through Thursday, May 1, is $12 per person for families and $15 for individuals, and includes a T-shirt. On Friday, May 2, and race day, the fee is $15 per person for families and $18 for individuals, which also includes a T-shirt. Regardless of sign-up date, there is a $10 registration option that does not include the T-shirt. Pre-registrants may pick up their race packets at the ASC on Friday, May 2 from 5:30 – 7 p.m. To register online or to obtain a printable registration form, visit tallytailsandtrails.org.
Easterwood Drive will be closed at 7 a.m. on Saturday, May 3, for the races. Participants and spectators will need to enter Tom Brown Park from Conner Blvd. Parking is available in the softball field across from the ASC.
