Tallahassee Senior Center Celebrates Ruby Anniversary
40 Years of Engaging Activities, Continuing Education and Rich Companionship
August 23, 2018
Next week, Tallahassee Senior Services will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Tallahassee Senior Center, which is in the Old Armory Building at 1400 N. Monroe Street. To mark this ruby occasion, there will be a program and open house on Tuesday, August 28, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. During this time, guests can glimpse the evolution of the Senior Center, fellowship with center participants and learn more about active aging opportunities.
"In our constantly changing community, one thing has remained the same since 1978; the Tallahassee Senior Center continues to be a haven for Tallahassee's active aging population," City Commissioner Gil Ziffer said. "Since opening, the Senior Center has welcomed countless adults through its doors, providing a place to connect and thrive. Celebrating 40 years is truly a testament to the value and worth that our Senior Services division brings to our community."
During the program, which takes place from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., Senior Services and the Institute of Successful Longevity will honor almost three dozen longtime participants who are well into their 90s and who remain active participants of the Senior Center. Past and present advisory council, Tallahassee Senior Center Foundation board members and staff will be acknowledged for their dedicated service to helping to build the Senior Center's robust programming schedule over the years.
Complimentary valet parking will be available from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for those attending the program. Following the program, lunch will be available. A $10 donation is suggested. To RSVP for lunch, please email Lisa.DollarCovert@talgov.com or call 891-4003.
In addition to the program honoring long-time supporters of the Senior Center, historical and interactive displays will be set up in an open house manner throughout the center to showcase old and new programs. Currently, the Senior Center offers nearly 200 activities that take place year-round and hosts many special events. As the Senior Center has grown, its reach has extended far beyond the Old Armory building and now includes 13 neighborhood sites, six of which are in Leon County community centers.
With the center bursting at the seams, a new, second senior center is being planned near Welaunee Boulevard in the Canopy development on land donated by Premier Fine Homes. Proposals call for the new facility to total around 60,000 square feet, which will accommodate activities, classes, recreation and more.
