City Offers Bill Payment Option Amid High Electric Usage
Program Provides Utility Payment Flexibility
June 05, 2019
Due to sweltering temperatures, the City of Tallahassee's Electric Utility recently recorded one of its highest peak loads since 2009. Despite above-normal demands for electric power this time of year, the City's Electric Utility has more than an adequate supply of power reserves to meet current needs.
On the customer's side, the biggest share of a household's energy use generally goes to heating and cooling. As the temperature outside rises, the AC system works harder and runs longer to keep the temperature inside pleasant. City utility customers using more energy to offset the hot weather should expect to see the increase on their next bill.
With unanimous approval from City Commissioners, the City is offering a one-time payment option for utility customers known as the Weather Relief Assistance Program (WRAP).
"This alternative payment program will help ease the financial burden higher bills may bring for some customers by allowing all residential and non-demand small business utility customers to defer 25 percent of their utility bill to October, when usage will likely be less," City Commissioner Dianne Williams-Cox said.
The program applies to City Utility bills issued between May 27 and September 30. To request the carryover option, customers need to contact City of Tallahassee Utilities at 891-4968.
Utility customers who choose to participate in WRAP can expect the carryover to be clearly identified as a separate line item on October's bill. Participating customers will also receive a reminder notice approximately two weeks prior to the October statement. The City will work with customers who participate in WRAP on an individual basis. This payment option can only be made one time per account. Non-demand small business customers can refer to their utility bill to determine their rate class, indicated as "GS" (refers to "General Service" commercial customers).
The City continues to encourage utility customers to use energy wisely. To help, the City offers a wide range of energy efficiency programs, including free energy audits, energy retrofit grants, natural gas and Energy Star appliance rebates and ceiling insulation grants.
