TPD’s ‘Operation Safe Summer’ Continues
July 24, 2019
In response to citizen complaints of criminal activity and incidents of gun violence, the Tallahassee Police Department’s High-Risk Offender Bureau initiated a plan to curtail crime in our community. TPD’s Violent Crimes Response Team (VCRT), Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving (COPPS) Squads and the K9 Unit, have been working together to stop crime and violence. Part of the plan includes high visibility patrols, traffic stops and surveillance of locations throughout the city which have been prone to criminal activity. Also teaming up with TPD are the Florida State University Police Department and the Leon County Sheriff’s Office (SPIDER Unit, Aviation Unit and K9 Team).
“Operation Safe Summer” began on June 5, 2019 and numerous arrests have been made including gun charges and a variety of drugs seized. So far, this initiative has been very successful to deter crime in the community. Having numerous officers from various law enforcement agencies on the street working together with a primary goal of proactive enforcement and crime prevention has been instrumental for the initiative. It has also contributed to quick arrests such as the recent shooting homicide on South Adams Street.
The most recent statistics are specific to ‘Operation Safe Summer’ and excludes patrol, criminal investigation and other specialty squads’ work outside of the initiative. Between June 5, 2019 and July 20, 2019, the initiative has yielded numerous arrests, drugs seized and firearms confiscated. This includes 110 arrests with 114 felony charges and 111 misdemeanor charges, 8 handguns recovered, and 748 traffic stops. We have seized over 12 pounds of marijuana, 61.2 grams of cocaine, 7 grams of MDMA, 1 gram of Alpha-PVP, 18 grams of Methamphetamine, 199.98 grams of Flakka and 7.25 grams of other types of illegal drugs.
The Tallahassee Police Department will continue with Operation Safe Summer for several more weeks and plans to do more initiatives for safety and crime prevention in the community in upcoming months. TPD would like to thank our community and law enforcement partners for their cooperation. We will continue to provide updates on this initiative as crime prevention is a joint effort and takes all of us working together to create and maintain a safe community.
