City’s Strategic Plan Sets Framework for Tallahassee’s Future
October 04, 2019
Today, the City of Tallahassee released its five-year strategic plan that will chart the progress toward achieving our collective aspirations for who we are as a community, while solidifying the City as the national leader in the delivery of public service. In January 2019, the City Commission directed the development of the plan that will guide the community to its 200th anniversary in 2024. The City Commission will provide a final review and is expected to adopt the strategic plan at its workshop on October 16, furthering the community conversation about how we advance Tallahassee.
Thousands of residents participated in the creation of the plan by sharing their priorities via a working group, in-person at events, an online survey, email and public meetings. With feedback from the community, the plan sets forth a framework to build a creative capital city that supports a strong community with vibrant neighborhoods and diverse, passionate people; that thrives as an innovative economic and educational hub; and that protects our natural resources. The plan focuses on Economic Development, Quality of Life, Impact of Poverty, Public Safety, Public Infrastructure, Organizational Effectiveness, and Public Trust – underscoring the Commission’s commitment to Tallahassee residents by setting goals, objectives, and targets that will shape our community for future generations.
The City’s workforce of approximately 3,000 dedicated employees will implement the approved plan. As the largest single provider of municipal services in our community, including police, fire, public transportation, electric, gas, water, parks, and more, employees pride themselves on providing exceptional customer service, while also exploring ways to increase efficiencies and create a strong, vibrant community. This commitment to best-in-class service delivery has cultivated our world-class parks, best tasting drinking water and led to many recognitions including No. 1 Public Utility in the nation, Best in Nation Gas Utility, Most Livable City and one of the South’s Best Cities.
The strategic plan encompasses the City’s revised mission, vision, and organizational values, which better reflect who we are as a community. Last updated two decades ago, these pillars were reviewed and revised in 2019 at the direction of the City Commission to reflect our community-focused, forward-thinking approach. Presented by a working group comprised of employees and residents, and adopted by the City Commission in April 2019, these statements serve as the plan’s guiding principles. Within the pages of this comprehensive strategic plan, you will see the integration of more than 40 departmental plans, research, and citizen feedback. Each of the goals and objectives is the result of a collaborative effort designed to seize upon opportunities and meet the needs of our growing, diverse community.
