U.T.O.P.I.A. - Undergoing Training & Obedience in Prison to Increase Adoptability

The Canine UTOPIA program is a partnership between Animal Services and the Taylor Correctional Institution (TCI) in Perry, FL. This unique program began on June 4, 2007 and aims to increase the adoptability of the canines in training.

The Animal Service Center dogs are housed at the TCI for 8 weeks to receive socialization and basic obedience training. All dogs participating in the UTOPIA Program must complete their training before being adopted (Minimum 8 weeks).

The UTOPIA adoption fee is $150.00. Services included in the adoption fee are: Behavioral assessment, health assessment, rabies vaccine, tag and certificate, other vaccinations appropriate for age, sterilization surgery, AVID microchip, Heartworm testing for dogs 6 months and older and basic obedience training. All are spayed/neutered unless otherwise noted.

U.T.O.P.I.A. Wish List

The Canine U.T.O.P.I.A. Program seeks to increase adoptions and decrease euthanasias for adoptable animals by providing canines with basic behavior and obedience training. There are many ways that you can help to support and expand this unique program, including the following donations:

  • Dog Treats: Semi-moist treats such as Bil- Jac, Hills Science Diet
  • Dog Collars: Nylon, adjustable with plastic buckle. All sizes, any color
  • Dog Toys: Kong, any size/ Tennis balls/ Dog approved rubber toy, any size. No rope, tug of war type of toy, or rawhide

Donations may be dropped off at the Animal Service Center 1125 Easterwood Drive. Financial contributions are also accepted:

  • $300.00…will sponsor a dog for one 6-week training session
  • $120.00…will allow us to purchase one, DOC approved, collapsible kennel
  • $30.00…will allow us to purchase a grooming kit for one dog (includes shampoo, dog brush/comb and nail trimmer)
  • $20.00…will allow us to purchase one dog bed to fit the kennel
  • $10.00…will allow us to purchase five, DOC approved, dog leashes
  • $5.00…will allow us to purchase one stainless steel food bowl
