Put Your Paws in Motion This Saturday
Annual Race Benefits Shelter Animals
May 01, 2013
This Saturday morning, May 4, the trails at Tom Brown Park will be packed with eager runners and walkers for the 12th annual Tails and Trails races. The course loops through the scenic trails of Tom Brown Park, beginning and ending at the Tallahassee-Leon Community Animal Service Center (ASC). The event includes both 5K and 10K races, along with a one-mile fun run/walk.
Registration begins at 7 a.m. on Saturday. The one-mile walk begins at 8 a.m., and the 5K and 10K races begin at 8:30 a.m. Families are encouraged to attend the event and will receive special pricing when three or more family members register to participate in the races. The early registration fee, available through tomorrow, May 2, is $12 per person for families and $15 for individuals, which includes a t-shirt. After May 2, the fee is $15 per person for families and $18 for individuals, which also includes the t-shirt. There is a registration option that does not include the t-shirt for $10 regardless of the sign-up date. Pre-registrants may pick up their race packets Friday night at the ASC from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
After the race or while you wait for your runner to return, be sure to take part in some of the fun activities being offered at the ASC including music, food, a kid’s tent, bouncy house and local business sponsored booths. You will also be able to meet some adorable animals that are available for adoption. In honor of the 12th annual Tails and Trails races, adoptions are only $12 this Saturday and Sunday.
Participants and spectators need to enter Tom Brown Park from Conner Blvd., as Easterwood Drive will be closed at 7 a.m. on race day. Parking is available in the softball field across from the ASC.
Each year, the ASC takes in about 9,000 animals and while several thousand animals are adopted and transferred to rescues each year, the reality is that there are simply more pets than homes with thousands being euthanized. The Animal Shelter Foundation (ASF) is a non-profit organization that provides life-saving support to the homeless animals in the care of the Tallahassee-Leon Community Animal Service Center.
Proceeds from Tails & Trails help support ASF programs like community spay/neuter programs to reduce pet overpopulation, supplemental veterinary care for shelter animals and prison dog programs such as, Heartworm Assistance Rehabilitation Training (HART) and Undergoing Training and Obedience in Prison to Increase Adoptability (UTOPIA), where dogs undergo training at local work camps. So walk, jog or run and help make a difference in the lives of homeless animals!
Advanced registration forms are available online at www.tallytailsandtrails.org and can be filled out in person at the ASC or PAWS pet boutique, located in the Killearn Center at 3491 Thomasville Road. You can also register online at www.Raceit.com. Participants are asked to please leave their own dogs at home so the ASC can highlight the homeless pets in their care that are still in need of forever homes.
