City Debuts Documentary Highlighting Civil Rights
Shows Making of the Tallahassee-Leon County Civil Rights Heritage Walk
January 21, 2014
Tallahassee's history is rich with events that promoted civil rights and prompted changes to integration laws in Florida and across the nation. Two such milestone events were recently commemorated with the unveiling of a landmark sidewalk on Jefferson Street in downtown. The Tallahassee-Leon County Civil Rights Heritage Walk honors more than 50 civil rights activists, also known as foot soldiers, who took part in the 1960s lunch counter sit-ins and the 1956 bus boycott, which was considered the second major bus boycott in the United States.
As part of its continued commitment to help memorialize these historical events and share the stories of the people who participated in them, the City of Tallahassee has produced a captivating documentary. Aptly titled "Footsteps to Freedom," this one-hour documentary will be shown on Friday, Jan. 31 at 6:30 p.m., in City Hall Commission Chambers, 300 S. Adams St. This event is free and the public is encouraged to attend.
Viewers will be taken on a journey back in time as the video chronicles the experiences of several foot soldiers as they, or their descendants, recall very personal and emotional memories. Rev. Henry Steele, Vince Larkins, Priscilla Stephens Kruize and the late Morris Thomas are a few of the individuals who share their stories.
This special theater-style debut comes at the request of some of the more than 500 people who attended the unveiling of the Heritage Walk on Sept. 30, 2013. The documentary also showcases the making, installation and unveiling of the sidewalk.
Immediately following the debut of the documentary on the evening of Jan. 31, it will be available for viewing on Talgov.com and also aired numerous times throughout February, which is Black History Month, on the City's television station WCOT, Channel 13 on Comcast and CenturyLink.
