$50,000 for 50 Years—Hitting the Halfway Mark
Senior Foundation Celebrates Milestone Birthday - by Rosetta Land
In celebration of Sheila Salyer's 50th birthday, the Tallahassee Senior Center and the TSC Foundation recently presented $25,000 to the foundation's Cornerstone Endowment Fund, representing the halfway mark toward reaching their goal of $50,000. Birthday party revelers gathered on February 18 and were led in song by Salyer's boss Dee Crumpler, Assistant Director of Neighborhood and Community Services. Party-goers indulged in fun games, cake and trimmings, and mingled with area officials and TSC board and advisory council members.
A slide show highlighted Salyer's tenure with TSC and drew rave reviews by attendees. In a brief address to the crowd, Salyer thanked everyone for their generous support of the endowment fund drive and encouraged the community to help the foundation raise the remaining $25,000. "Like building a railroad, we are laying the tracks for those coming behind us – for the next generation of senior center professionals. We have an obligation to keep the work moving forward," Salyer said passionately.
Salyer, Senior Services Manager for the City of Tallahassee for the past 11 years, achieved national accreditation by the National Institute of Senior Centers (NISC) and expanded program offerings beyond the center to 13 satellite sites. She also serves as the Florida delegate to the NISC, was a 2005 White House Conference on Aging delegate and is a member of Leadership Tallahassee Class 25.
The Cornerstone Endowment Fund serves as the long-term endowment of the TSC Foundation and is managed by the Community Foundation. Investing in the Cornerstone Fund helps ensure quality programs and services can and will be provided by Tallahassee Senior Services and the TSC Foundation into the future. The Endowment Fund drive is expected to raise the remaining $25,000 by September.
