TFD Responds to House Fire
Family of Nine Displaced
January 23, 2013
At around 11:00 a.m., the Tallahassee Fire Department responded to a house fire in a single story home, located in the 2800 Block of Southwood Drive. The resident called 9-1-1 after seeing black smoke and quickly evacuated three children to safety. Two rooms of the home were heavily involved in fire when firefighters from Station 3 arrived. Fire crews extinguished the blaze and searched the home for victims. All four of the occupants were accounted for. Firefighters revived an unresponsive cat found inside the home but were unable to save the dog. No injuries were reported at the scene and damages from the fire were estimated at $40,000. A family of nine will not be able to return to the home until necessary repairs are made. The cause of the fire was electrical in nature and originated in a breaker panel. The Tallahassee Fire Department, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the State Fire Marshal's Office investigated the cause of the fire. The Red Cross assisted the occupants of the home at the scene. The City of Tallahassee Utilities Department assisted TFD at the scene by securing utility service to the home.
