The Tallahassee Fire Department would like to remind you that it is time to change the batteries in your smoke alarms this weekend when you adjust your clocks for daylight savings time. A smoke alarm with a dead or missing battery is the same as having no smoke alarm at all. Please follow these simple tips regarding your smoke alarms:
- Test smoke alarms monthly
- Install smoke alarms on every level of your home
- Many fatal fires begin late at night or early in the morning, so the U.S. Fire Administration recommends installing smoke alarms both inside and outside of sleeping areas
- The entire smoke alarm unit should be replaced every 8-10 years
