The City has tried to balance the design of Gaines Street between the needed physical space for cars and the safety and comfort of pedestrians and bicyclists within the limited right-of-way. Gaines Street is a narrow corridor, and the improvements are being made within the existing right of way to help preserve existing businesses and limit the expense of the project. The current design is a result of a 2007 workshop with citizens on how to best design the roadway.
