City Prepared for Potential Weather Threats
Sandbag Locations Open Today
September 03, 2018
The City of Tallahassee is closely monitoring the changing weather conditions. According to the National Hurricane Center, Tropical Storm Gordon is tracking to make landfall well west of Tallahassee. However, if the track should shift, our area could experience increased wind activity and heavy rainfall, which could cause localized flooding. City departments are prepared to respond as needed.
To assist citizens in flood prone areas with preparing for potential flooding, the City has opened two sandbag locations. Sandbags are available at James Messer Park South (2830 Jackson Bluff Road) and Winthrop Park (1601 Mitchell Avenue). Sandbags are limited to 25 bags per household. Citizens need to bring shovels to fill bags themselves. Locations will not be staffed, but crews will monitor and provide additional sand and bags as needed. The site will be open until the storm threat has passed and it is determined there is no longer a need.
For information about additional sandbag locations offered by Leon County, visit www.LeonCountyFL.gov/ei/.
Crews will continue to check areas of known flooding to remove obstructions and post warnings for drivers if needed. All motorists should use caution and not drive through flooded areas or around barricades.
Heavy rains can cause power outages. Electric Utility crews are on standby and ready to be deployed, with extra staffing on call as needed.
Citizens are encouraged to stay connected with the City by updating their utility account contact information at Talgov.com/Update.
Citizens should also download the free DigiTally app now. Through the app, you can easily report issues such as downed trees and power outages. Outages can also be reported via Talgov.com and the City’s e+ Mobile app. The outage reporting page on Talgov.com, DigiTally and e+ Mobile features a map that shows reported outages. City utility customers can also call 891-4968 to report power outages; call wait times will be longer during major events.
