Protester Arrested at Adams and Brevard
April 17, 2020
Just before 6:00am on April 17th, Mazurek and four other individuals arrived at the intersection of North Adams Street and East Brevard Street and set up at the gate leading to the Governor’s Mansion. They brought two large plastic barrels filled with concrete to the location and Mazurek secured his arms inside the barrels in an attempt to defeat efforts to arrest or move him.
One of the four remaining individuals fled on foot when Florida Department of Law Enforcement agents approached them to investigate the activity. The individual was identified as Karen Smith, 45. Due to her flight, she was charged with Resisting/Obstructing Arrest Without Violence by FDLE agents.
The barrels had pipes installed with metal bars the protester could attach his arms to by using carabiners. This would prevent his arms from being forcibly removed, but he could unclip himself if he chose.
Tallahassee Police and Florida Department of Law Enforcement officers and supervisors talked with him at length in an attempt to get him to voluntarily surrender, but he refused.
The Tallahassee Fire Department brought in their Urban Search and Rescue Team to assist. Their members have specialized training in using heavy equipment to free trapped victims, and were able to dismantle the concrete without injuring the suspect.
The suspect was taken into custody and transported to the Leon County Detention Facility.
His protest was aimed at the Florida Department of Corrections.
