Facts on Local Homelessness
The Tallahassee Coalition for the Homeless conducts "street count" surveys that gather information from agencies, the public school system, shelters and homeless camps. The count represents only a one-day "snapshot" of homelessness; 3,000 – 4,000 people each year are estimated to be homeless in Tallahassee.
- In 2003, 703 individuals were identified; 54% were adults, 25% were veterans and 46% were children.
- Women were 35 percent of those surveyed.
- People with jobs made up 26 percent of the total.
- People who receive disability or retirement benefits made up 29 percent.
- One in five lived on the street, in the woods or in a car
- 63% of those interviewed had been homeless two or more times; 23% of these had been homeless 6 or more times.
