The City of Tallahassee adopted the Gaines Street Revitalization Plan ("The Plan") in November 2000. The Plan articulated its objective for the Gaines Street Corridor in a 1996-planning project that involved over a hundred people. Out of that effort came a vision for creating a special place for residents, workers, students, and visitors. The vision was to establish an area with a unique urban character, providing residential, entertainment, and cultural activities, all complimented by parks and bike paths.
In the relatively few months that have passed since its adoption, Tallahassee residents have claimed ownership of The Plan and is reinvesting in itself.
Railroad Avenue
The community's commitment to reinvesting in itself is unmistakable at this central intersection – "ground-zero" for the entire revitalization area. Some of the businesses that are open or in the process of opening are:
- The Cow Haus at 809 Railroad Avenue will soon be a live music club.
- The Fat Sandwich Shop at 825 Railroad Avenue will be open after completing their renovation, probably mid-March, 2002.
- Javaheads at 903 Railroad is a coffee house with coffee roasted on site.
- Intrinsik at 915-1 Railroad Avenue, features barbers and hairstylists for men and woman, and also house the Eclectic Shop featuring African art and the work of local artists.
These are just a few of the businesses. For a more complete description of all the business activities in this area, select the links below to view the latest Gaines Street Newsletter.
