Proactive Patrol Leads to an Arrest for a Firearm and Drugs

On Saturday, July 27, 2019 around 1:40 a.m., the Tallahassee Police Department arrested a man for being in possession of a firearm and drugs at the intersection of Rankin Avenue and West Orange Avenue. The Violent Crimes Response Team (VCRT), while participating in Operation Safe Summer, was conducting proactive patrol in response to citizen complaints and in an attempt to deter criminal activity. Officers conducted a traffic stop for a vehicle speeding in the area. During their contact with the driver of the vehicle, officers became aware of drug activity inside the vehicle and developed probable cause to conduct a search of the vehicle.
After a thorough on-scene investigation, officers confiscated over 20 grams of cocaine, a loaded 9mm handgun and drug paraphernalia. The driver of the vehicle, Trayveontaye Cheesmon, was out on bond from Gadsden County for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, discharging a firearm from a vehicle and possession of cocaine. TPD officers arrested Mr. Cheesmon and transported to the Leon County Detention Facility for processing on new firearm and drug charges.
