The City of Tallahassee is committed to the construction and maintenance of clean and safe public right-of-ways for our citizens in a respectful manner, with a focus on quality, customer needs, and the effective protection of public investment in the City's infrastructures. Below are many of the specific services provided:
Drainage Maintenance: includes cleaning and reshaping roadside ditches and major canals; cleaning and restoring stormwater facilities (ponds); cleaning enclosed stormwater systems; repairing damaged drainage structures; performing weed and brush control along major canals and stormwater facilities; and dredging and stabilizing outfall ditches and ponds. Roadside ditches are maintained on as-needed basis as well as upon request from citizens. Currently, ponds (more properly known as Storm Water Management Facilities, or SWMFs) are mowed at least 2 times per year, with major maintenance activities performed on as-needed basis. Weed and brush control along major ditches is performed once per year. Citizens' request are given higher priority in scheduling of maintenance activities.
Right of Way Maintenance: consists of mowing public right-of-ways excluding residential curb and gutter areas; performing litter control along public right-of-ways excluding residential curb and gutter areas; edging sidewalks within school zones only; and trimming overhanging limbs and shrubs along public streets. Currently, public right-of-ways are mowed up to 4 times per mowing season. Citizen requests are given higher priority in scheduling of maintenance activities.
Florida Department of Transportation Contract: consists of mowing, litter control, sidewalk and curb edging state right-of-ways within the city limits. Mowing is performed 6 times per year. Litter control is performed 12 times per year. Sidewalk and curb edging is performed 3 times per year.
Landscape and Tree Maintenance: includes removing dead, diseased, and hazardous trees along the public right-of-ways; removing downed trees during emergencies; maintaining selected landscaped areas including medians, parking areas, and other investments of beautification activities by pruning, mulching, edging, mowing and other such activities; installing small landscape improvements; and administering Adopt-A-Street and Adopt-A-Tree programs. Landscaped areas are maintained twice per month. The annual Adopt-A-Tree program (including planting) runs in the late winter/early spring timeframe.
Construction Services: includes the construction of sidewalks; intersection improvements; construction of drainage structures; street improvements; bridge repairs; guardrail and handrail construction; and miscellaneous new and maintenance-related infrastructure improvements.
Street Maintenance: includes pothole patching; curb & gutter repair; sidewalk repair; base repair; guardrail repair, bridge repair; utility cut repair and unpaved roadway maintenance. Currently, potholes and utility cuts are repaired within 2 days of notification; sidewalk, curb & gutter, and unpaved roadway maintenance are performed on an as-needed basis.
Street Resurfacing: includes milling, base repair and resurfacing. Based on a pavement assessment program that evaluates pavement conditions, approximately 70 lane miles of streets are resurfaced annually. Each street is resurfaced on an average 20-year cycle. The resurfacing program is undertaken by in-house resources as well a through private contractors.
Street Sweeping: includes sweeping of streets and parking lots. A total of 7000 curb miles are swept annually. Sweeping of streets is accomplished through established routes throughout the City. Currently each FDOT street is swept on a once-a-month cycle, others on a 120-day cycle; we also sweep for special functions.
