Art Classes and Exhibits

Tallahassee Senior Center for the ArtsFounded in 1980, the Tallahassee Senior Center for the Arts offers a supportive environment for both beginning and advanced artists to receive guidance from experienced instructors. Students also benefit from ongoing art exhibits, special classes, and opportunities to display and sell their art.

Winners: Best of Show was awarded to Linda O'Sullivan for a quilted wall hanging Celtic Flamingoes. Other winners were First Place: Wendy Devarieux, Bald Point, pastel drawing; Second Place: Jill Quadango, Reflections, oil painting; Third Place: Linda Pelc, Koi on Lily Pond, watercolor; and Honorable Mentions: Jean Marani, Roger Messimer, Kenn Bass and Yoshiko Murdick.

In July, the Thursday morning Watercolor Class had a guest teacher, Tonya Toole, guide them through the steps of painting a portrait in watercolor all using the same photograph of Tonya's great niece Megan Brankamp. The group enjoyed the project and had great results as shown. Artists are Mary Gambon, Jim Sayes, Gwen Woods, Nancy J. Johnson, Janet Erwin, Adeline Wilkes, Ruth Draper and Ken Menke in the back.

Exhibition features marvelous watercolors, oils and acrylic paintings, pastel drawings and sculpture from the TSC Studio Artist Classes. Join the artists for a Public Reception and Awards Ceremony, Friday evening, November 6, 6:00 - 8:30pm

Exhibition of drawings, paintings, photography, collage, calligraphy and sculpture created by the Art Instructors and Staff at the Tallahassee Senior Center.

The Galleries at TSC open to the public Monday - Friday, 9:00am - 9:00pm.

Artist at workUpcoming Art Workshops

Learn something new or sharpen up old skills through a short-term special topic art class. Registration required at least one week prior to class. Art workshops are taught at the Tallahassee Senior Center unless otherwise indicated. Call 891-4016 for details and registration.

Discover Japanese Tea Bowls
Mondays, October 19 - November 23 (six weeks), 12:30 - 3:30pm
Instructor: Mark Fletcher, MFA

Add to your clay hand-building skills as you develop a Japanese Tea Bowl and discover the culture behind the tea cult. Follow the historical development of the Japanese Tea Bowl in an accelerated version of the traditional learning steps. Course culminates with a taste of real Mattcha Tea you mix in your own Tea Bowl. This course is hands-on and project-oriented but also includes historic foundations and how-to demonstrations. Open to all levels: beginner through advanced. $48 seniors 55+; others $60

Beginning Art
Tuesdays, October 6 - November 24 (8 weeks), 2:00 - 4:30pm

Instructor: Ruth Barth

Drawing is the best place to start for beginners. It is fundamental to most other forms of art, requires only basic art supplies and opens the door to understanding design concepts. Students are introduced to drawing using drawing pencils, graphite and colored pencils. Students will learn fundamental design concepts such as positive/negative space, symmetry/asymmetry, and creating dimension. The instructor leads students through non-intimidating projects that will spark creativity and self-expression. Skill Level: Beginning - Intermediate. $64 seniors 55+; others $80

Beginning Calligraphy – Gothic Style
Wednesdays, October 7 - November 18 (six weeks), 6:00 - 8:30pm

Instructor: Leslie Puckett

Learn the basics of beautiful writing with a broad-edge pen in the Gothic style of lettering also called 'Black Letter' or 'Old English'. This letterform creates a rich texture and background for elaborate decorated letters. Learn lettering and design techniques and nifty ways to use them. Skill Level: Beginning - Intermediate. $48 seniors 55+; $60 others

Drawing Apples to Zebras at Woodville Community Center
Tuesdays, October 13 - November 17 (six weeks), 9:30am - 12:00n

Instructor: Bart Frost

If you can write or print your name, you can draw. Whatever your drawing skill level or interest – landscapes, still life, pets, portraits or the human figure, this class is for you. Students may use pencil, charcoal and/or dry pastels. Skill Level: Beginners. $48 seniors 55+; $60 others. To register, 891-4016

Beginning Painting with Oils & Acrylics at Fort Braden Community Center
Thursdays, October 15 - November 19 (six weeks), 2:00 - 4:30pm

Instructor: Robert DeWitt Smith

Each session will provide both a demonstration and the opportunity to paint. Students will learn to purposefully employ positive and negative shapes, line, color, and value in producing a painting. The class will also explore methods of creating your own low-cost/high quality painting surfaces. Students can explore abstract painting, as well as representational painting. Skill Level: Beginners. $48 seniors 55+; $60 others

These labs are open studio times that provide participants an opportunity to practice their art with the camaraderie of other students. No instructor; cost is a $4 lab fee.

On-going Studio Classes are available for all levels of artists from beginners to professionals. Instructors work with individual students who assist and critique one another in an exciting, collaborative environment. No pre-registration required. It is recommended that you visit the class and talk to the instructor before joining the class; the instructor will provide you with an individualized supply list. All classes are located at the Senior Center unless otherwise noted. Fee per class $8 adults 55+; $10 others.

Artistry in Clay: Hand Built Pottery
Mondays, 10:00 - 12:00n

Students learn basic hand building techniques such as coiling, pinching, and slab building to build or sculpt objects of their choice. Basic wheel throwing with a kick wheel is available. All levels of students are welcome.

Draw, Paint and Enjoy! at Bradfordville Historic Schoolhouse
Wednesdays, 1:30 - 4:30pm

Discover the art of working with pencil, pastel, colored pencil, and other drawing materials as you gain valuable insight into composition and design.

Tuesdays, 6:00 - 9:00pm

Oil and Acrylics
Wednesdays, 1:00 - 4:00pm

A small class with individualized instruction allows students to work at their own pace in representational or abstract painting, either in oil or acrylic. Whether a beginner or returning artist, you gain experience in composition, use of color and value in your paintings. Come by class to meet the instructor, discuss the difference between oil and acrylic painting and learn what art supplies you'll need for class. Students of all skill levels welcome.

Sumi-E (Oriental Ink Painting)
Wednesdays, 10:00am - 12:00n

Chinese calligraphy and painting taught through carefully structured methods. Instruction ranges from basic to the more advanced techniques.

Tile Painting
Thursdays, 1:00 - 4:00pm
Design and glaze your own tiles. In this class, you'll learn techniques for painting designs on ceramic tiles. You have the option of using stencils or free draw simple designs on 6" tiles. Tiles and glazes used in class are purchased from instructor and instructor kiln-fires the tiles. Discover options for framing or developing tiles into larger projects. Create great gifts as trivets, wall décor, kitchen and bath tiles, murals or house numbers. Beginners welcome; no pre-registration required.

Watercolor
Tuesdays & Thursdays, 9:00am - 12:00n

Covers all techniques of watercolor with beginning and advanced students painting side by side.
