New StarMetro Service for
Greater Northwest Tallahassee
February 28, 2014
Approximately 7,000 residents living in northwest Tallahassee now have another transportation option and greater access to StarMetro buses. Known as Lake Jackson FLEX, StarMetro operates the weekday route and shuttle service that provides “curb-to-curb” transportation to any location within an 11-square-mile area near Lake Jackson.
The FLEX service provides area residents with access to the Oak Valley Shopping Center, Lake Jackson Trading Post and any other location within the designated area. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday during the peak commute hours of 6 - 9 a.m. and 4 -7 p.m. It also arrives at the Lake Jackson Town Center at scheduled times to connect with two of StarMetro’s fixed routes – Big Bend and Forest. This connection enables riders to access all of StarMetro’s bus routes to reach numerous locations throughout Tallahassee.
“The Tallahassee City Commission had been searching for ways to help expand StarMetro services to serve more residents,” said City Commissioner Scott Maddox, member of the City's Long Range Planning Target Issue Committee who spoke at today’s event announcing the new service. “FLEX service offers a lifeline to these residents connecting them to all areas of Tallahassee via StarMetro.”
StarMetro is operating the new FLEX service with funds from a Florida Department of Transportation service development grant with a 50 percent match from the City and Leon County. This service may become the future model for securing additional funding and developing similar projects in other outlying areas of the community.
“Reliable transportation is paramount to helping our rural residents like those in the Lake Jackson area remain healthy, active and productive,” said County Commissioner Mary Ann Lindley, Chair of the Transportation Disadvantaged Coordinating Board for Tallahassee-Leon County. “By offering enhanced transportation options to residents in this area, especially those that may be disadvantaged citizens, we increase the reliability of services so critical for many, especially in regards to medical services, education and employment.”
Lake Jackson FLEX is available to the general public. To make a reservation, customers should call 891-5199 between 6:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and indicate that they would like to schedule a Lake Jackson FLEX trip. Reservations must be made at least two hours before the desired travel (on Friday for an early Monday morning trip). Trips are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis, and bikes may be transported as well. StarMetro’s regular one-way fares (or college ID), including free transfers, apply.
