E-Waste
Electronic waste, or e-waste, continues to grow rapidly as our electronic equipment wears out or is replaced for newer equipment and technology. Unfortunately, electronics contain hazardous materials such as lead, mercury, arsenic, and cadmium, among others.
Because of these hazardous materials, electronics cannot be left for pickup as bulky items or placed in the garbage to go to the landfill. E-Waste includes items such as computers, monitors, printers, TV's, DVD players, cell phones, and hand held devices. E-Waste does not include the traditional "white goods" such as refrigerators, stoves, washers, dryers and microwaves, which can be left out for bulky item pickup.
Fortunately, electronics contain recyclable materials and there are resources for reuse and recycling of electronics.
- If they are still in working order or repairable, consider taking them to one of the area Goodwill stores or other charitable organization.
- Other E-waste can be taken to the Leon County's Electronics Recycling located at the landfill at 7550 Apalachee Parkway. The County also holds Hazardous Waste Roundups at various locations throughout the year. Call 606-1802 for more information and hours or visit their website.
- Bring your E-waste to one of our semi-annual Cash for Trash events. The next Cash for Trash will be Saturday, April 19, 2008 from 8 am to 2 pm at the City's Solid Waste facility located at 2727 Municipal Way.

Additional Information on Electronics
Electronics Can Contain Hazardous Materials
The City of Tallahassee's Solid Waste Services does not collect electronic devices. The City has changed its policy in light of a University of Florida study indicating that the material in electronics releases enough lead to be classified as "hazardous waste" under federal Environmental Protection Agency regulations.
Many types of electronics (such as televisions and computer monitors, cell phones, electronics with computer chips) contain hazardous materials. Under interpretation of regulations of the Environmental Protection Agency and the laws governing the handling of hazardous waste, Solid Waste Services cannot pick up electronics placed at the curb as residential bulky items or in commercial dumpsters. The Leon County Landfill and Transfer Station will not except these loose electronic items.
Electronics do not include traditional "white goods" appliances such as stoves and refrigerators. These types of appliances may be left out as bulky items.
