Recycling Makes a Difference
April 08, 2014
Our community has a strong commitment to recycling and the numbers now show it.
Since the City of Tallahassee implemented no-sort single-stream recycling last October, the residential recycling rate in Tallahassee has increased by more than 20 percent.
Great job everyone!
This is a dramatic increase, and Your Own Utilities thanks everyone for their effort. It’s important to continue to recycle as much as possible.
The more you recycle, the more you help protect our environment and reduce the amount of waste at the landfill.
Single-stream recycling makes it easy and convenient. There’s no need to sort. You can mix all paper, metal, glass and plastic together in your Smart Cart.
It does help to flatten boxes to save space and remove food or drink residue to reduce odors and insects.
Also, please remember that plastic bags cannot go in the recycle bins and create a litter problem at the landfill. It’s much better to reuse the bags around the house or drop them off at area collection sites, such as Publix.
Similarly, Styrofoam should not be placed in the Smart Cart but can be dropped off at various local courier delivery companies, such as FedEx and UPS.
Here are just a few items that can be recycled in your Smart Cart:
- gallon milk cartons,
- lotion bottles
- yogurt cups
- soda bottles
- shampoo bottles
- water jugs
- detergent bottles
- yogurt cups
- peanut butter jars
- fruit and vegetable cans
Most importantly, please remember not to put trash and other non-recyclable items in your recycling bin.
Thanks for all that you do to make Tallahassee a great place to live!
