How To Read Your Electric Smart Meter

The Smart Metering Project - City of Tallahassee Utilities Checking the reading on your new electric Smart Meter couldn't be easier. No dials moving in opposite directions and adding up the reading on different dials. Just a simple-to-read LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) that gives you your current reading in kilowatt-hours (kWh).

Your Smart Meter LCD rotates through a series of three screens on a continuing basis.

  1. Current Meter Reading
  2. Network Display
  3. Test Mode

See the samples below for more detailed information.

LED Display Current Reading Sample

This is the display that we are all most interested in, our current meter reading.

1. This is a five digit number that displays the current meter reading in kilowatt-hours. To get your current usage from your last reading, subtract the reading on your last bill from this reading for your total to date.

2. This square flashes at a rate that indicates the amount of energy you are using. The slower this square blinks, the less energy you are using.

3. This arrow indicates the direction of the energy. The arrow going to the right indicates energy coming into your home which is the normal situation. For customers that have solar net metering, an arrow pointing to the left would indicate when energy is being uploaded back to the electric grid.

In the near future, you will be able to get your current usage to date here on our web site or by calling a Customer Service Representative.

LED Display Network Registration Sample

This screen displays information about the network that collects the data from your meter.

LED Test Mode Sample

The final screen is the LCD Display Test screen. This tests all displays of the Smart Meter including the meter tampering display.

Smart Meter Face Plate
The faceplate on the lower part of the meter has information about the meter itself including serial number, City of Tallahassee Utilities meter number, type of meter and LAN ID.
