North Ridge/Fleetwood Flood Mitigation
Description
The North Ridge/Fleetwood Flood Mitigation Project addressed residential flooding in the communities surrounding the Jake Gaither Golf Course. In 1994, 18 residential structures experienced finished floor flooding. Due to the magnitude of flooding and the 40-square mile upstream watershed, it was determined that a structural solution was not feasible. On February 22, 1995, staff presented the Commission a plan to acquire 47 properties located within the 25-year floodplain. Voluntary property acquisition was completed in October 1996. Acquired houses were demolished; mobile homes were relocated and the property was returned to a natural condition. Additionally, three homes were elevated above 100-year flood stage and one house was protected through the construction of a floodwall. This project also addressed stormwater pollution at Silver Lake. A trash collection system was installed adjacent to Jake Gaither Golf Course to remove floating debris from the East Branch Drainage Ditch thereby reducing trash in Silver Lake.
