Centerville Road Reliability Project
Reliable electric service is important to everyone. To meet the needs of our customers, a project along Centerville Road is underway to place a portion of the existing overhead electric lines underground. When complete, it will help improve electric reliability in this area. Construction is taking place along Centerville Road from Shamrock Street to Pimlico Drive. Many of the power outages that occur in this area are a result of the tree canopy and caused by interference from tree limbs and animals. Converting this section of overhead service to underground will reduce the likelihood that customers will experience a service interruption.
Construction began in mid-March and is expected to last approximately eight to ten months. During the construction phase, portions of the bridal trail are closed and temporary lane closures are occasionally needed as the new underground facilities are installed. A temporary fence has been installed along the bridal trail to ensure a safe work environment and protect the trees during construction.
Utility staff has and will continue to work closely with Roberts Elementary and Montford Middle schools to minimize the impact to students who use the bridal trail to get to and from school. Working together, the City and Leon County Schools have arranged for bus services for those students that would normally utilize the bridal trail.
As with all projects, the City is making every effort to ensure that tree trimming and removal is kept to a minimum to protect the beauty of our canopy road. As part of the work being done on this project, while it is necessary to remove some trees located along the bridal path for the underground installation and future line maintenance, additional trees will be planted prior to the project's completion. Knowing how much we all treasure our canopy roads, the City worked closely with the Tallahassee-Leon County Canopy Roads Citizens Committee to limit the impact to the best extent possible.
