The Upside of Downsizing Your Life
Tallahassee Senior Services, AARP and Others Partner for Engaging Program
April 20, 2017
As people age they are often faced with many questions about their living arrangements. Are you going to stay in your current home? Are you going to downsize to a smaller home? Are you going to move into a retirement community? To help with these questions and outline the many housing options available, Tallahassee Senior Services, AARP and other sponsors will provide an interactive and engaging program on Monday, April 24, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Tallahassee Senior Center, located at 1400 N. Monroe Street. The program, which is part of the City of Tallahassee's Age-Friendly Community Initiative, will feature various exhibits, a workshop and a panel discussion.
"An Age-Friendly Community is one that focuses on new ways of thinking to create the best living environment for everyone, those young and young at heart," City Commissioner Gil Ziffer said. "This program is the perfect example of how Tallahassee is promoting an enriched community that works for our growing senior population."
The keynote speaker will be Marni Jameson, nationally syndicated home design columnist and author of "Downsizing the Family Home: What to Save, What to Let Go." Jameson's popular column, "At Home with Marni Jameson," appears in more than 25 newspapers throughout the United States, reaching 7 million readers each week. A long time writer for Tribune Media, which includes the Los Angeles Times and Orlando Sentinel, Jameson has also written for other top-tier media, including Woman's Day, Family Circle, Child and Fit Pregnancy magazines.
The panel discussion titled "Do I Move or Do I Stay?" will feature local seniors Joan Cassells, Sandy Higdon, Marjorie Turnbull and Phil Welsh. The panelists will draw upon their own experiences and take questions from the audience.
Registration for the program, which includes brunch, is currently open and costs $10. To register, visit tallahasseeseniorfoundation.org.
