City Donates Nearly 3,000 Pounds of Food to Second Harvest
Stuff the Bus Food Drive Donations to Feed Local Children and Families
March 18, 2020
As many in the community continue to make necessary adjustments related to the impacts of COVID-19, the City of Tallahassee is helping to ensure that residents who are in need have access to food. StarMetro, the City’s public transportation department, delivered a 40-foot bus stuffed with food donations to Second Harvest of the Big Bend. The donations were a result of the annual Stuff the Bus food drive, which collected nearly 3,000 pounds of non-perishable food items to benefit local children, families and seniors.
“We know that there are residents who live on the edge of hunger and will be further impacted by collective efforts to combat COVID-19,” Mayor John Dailey said. “The City of Tallahassee’s annual StarMetro Stuff the Bus food drive has long benefited area residents; this year, our community’s collections mean even more to local families in need and reinforces why it’s so important to donate to our local food bank.”
The final tally from the annual food drive exceeded the 2,020-pound goal for 2020. During the food drive, aptly themed “Drive the Love”, StarMetro collected non-perishable food items on its buses and within City facilities.
“This food donation to Second Harvest arrived at a critical time for us as we are working to meet the needs of our community. As we gear up feeding programs in response to the increased demand caused by the COVID-19 situation, a well-stocked food bank is critical to the health and prosperity of our most vulnerable populations,” Monique Ellsworth, CEO of Second Harvest, said. “We are grateful to the City of Tallahassee and overwhelmed by the generosity of the people who live here and work tirelessly for this community.”
The Stuff the Bus campaign continues to be one of the City’s most successful food drives. To learn how you can donate to Second Harvest, visit fightinghunger.com. Visit the City’s YouTube channel to see and hear first-hand why this delivery was vital to the community.
