It’s Time to Play Ball at Capital Park
Celebration Marks Completion of Southside Park Refurbishment
June 08, 2018
On Tuesday, June 12, the City of Tallahassee, two-time World Series champion and ESPN analyst David Ross and representatives from The Scotts Company LLC (Scotts) and Major League Baseball (MLB) will celebrate the official reopening of the baseball field at Capital Park.
The City's south side ballfield was recently refurbished as part of the Scotts®Field Refurbishment Program, a grant initiative through Scotts and MLB. Ross served on the special blue-ribbon committee that selected organizations to receive funding, and while Tallahassee was not set to receive funding, Ross, a Tallahassee resident, selected the park as a special honoree due to his fond memories of playing at the field in his youth.
"Long before playing on Major League fields, I got my start right here in Tallahassee on a local field," Ross said. "I'm proud to be part of an initiative that allows me to give back to my community by upgrading one of the fields from my childhood where I spent many days working hard and most of all, having fun."
"We are thrilled about the new and improved field and cannot thank David, Scotts and Major League Baseball enough," Mayor Pro Tem Curtis Richardson said. "These upgrades help us to not only continue providing an opportunity for young players in the area to be active outdoors as they learn the game of baseball, but they also help to strengthen the sense of community pride among area residents."
Residents are invited to come to Capital Park at 448 Omega Avenue for the ribbon cutting at 6 p.m. on June 12 to see the upgrades, which include new infield turf and more. Following the ribbon cutting ceremony, 60 youth players that were pre-registered will take part in a baseball/softball clinic organized by the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation.
"It's really cool to think that David Ross played on the same field when he was my age," said Easias Bass, a youth player at Capital Park. "I'm grateful that he chose this park to be improved, and I can't wait until my teammates and I can play on it!"
