City Celebrates Earth Month in April
Community Encouraged to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
April 02, 2018
This year, Earth Day, which takes place on Sunday, April 22, will celebrate its 48th anniversary. Founded in 1970, Earth Day seeks to support efforts that protect and preserve the natural environment. Sharing these same goals of protection and preservation, the City of Tallahassee will celebrate Earth Day with planned activities throughout the month of April.
"As we observe Earth Month in the City of Tallahassee, I encourage everyone in our community to make the commitment to reduce our negative impacts on the environment," Mayor Andrew Gillum said. "If we are all more environmentally-conscious, we can ensure that our children and grandchildren will have a clean, healthy community to grow up in."
Earth Month events include:
- Earth Day on Your Block - The City will help local neighborhoods spearhead their own sustainability and beautification efforts. This new initiative will encourage and lend support to neighborhoods that want to host their own Earth Month activities, which may include recycling and cleanup efforts. For more information on how to participate in Earth Day on Your Block, visit Talgov.com.
- Cash for Trash - This special trash collection event, which takes place on Saturday, April 21, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., will allow citizens to dispose of bulky items, electronic waste, paint, batteries and other household items too large to fit in the container. Participants with an active residential garbage account will receive a $5 credit on their City utility bill. This event will be held at the Solid Waste Services facility, located at 2727 Municipal Way.
- Greening Tallahassee: An Earth Day Celebration - The City will host a free, family-friendly event celebrating Mother Earth on Sunday, April 22, from 12 - 4 p.m. at the Thomas P. Smith Water Reclamation Facility, located at 4505 Springhill Road. The event will feature tours of the water treatment facility and laboratory, exhibitor booths and educational demonstrations for children of all ages. During the festival, attendees will be able to tour the new 120-acre, 20-megawatt Tallahassee Solar farm. Transportation will be provided from the Water Reclamation Facility to the solar farm, located nearby on the property of the Tallahassee International Airport (TLH). While doors open at noon, tours will begin at 1 p.m. For safety reasons, those wishing to take part in the water reclamation facility tour must be at least 42 inches tall and must be wearing flat, closed toe shoes (i.e., sneakers or dock shoes).
- In-Home Edition of Longest Table - Embracing farm to table cuisine, citizens will break down barriers while sharing a sustainable meal on Earth Day, Sunday, April 22, at the In-Home Edition of the Longest Table. At 6 p.m., over 100 dinners, including six to eight guests, will take place simultaneously in homes, restaurants and public spaces throughout the community. RSVP to the Longest Table by calling 891-8728 or visit www.longesttable.com.
Throughout April, information about the many programs and services offered by the City that help protect and preserve the environment, as well as conservation tips, will be shared via COTNews on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. For more information, visit Talgov.com.
