Don’t Let That Box Lead to a Break-in
Special Holiday Recycling Centers to be Established
December 19, 2017
All is calm, and the new TV is bright. Will its box at the curb bring a thief in the night?
To help prevent crime after the holidays, the City of Tallahassee will set up special cardboard-only receptacles in three community locations. The goal is twofold: reduce residential burglaries and recycle more cardboard. This project is a joint effort of the Tallahassee Police, City of Tallahassee Waste Management and Community Beautification and City of Tallahassee Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Affairs departments.
Boxes serve as billboards for criminals driving through your neighborhood. It lets them easily see who received the newest televisions, video games or other electronics over the holiday. Instead of leaving the boxes in front of your home for recycling, simply bring them to the designated cardboard-only receptacles. This will help deter potential break-ins.
The recycling receptacles will be available from Tuesday, Dec. 26, through Friday, Dec. 29. They will be located at the James Messer Sports Complex (2830 Jackson Bluff Road), Tom Brown Park (443 Easterwood Drive) and San Luis Mission Park (131 San Luis Road).
“Simple actions, like this holiday recycling program or locking your doors, can reduce the likelihood that you will become a victim of crime,” TPD Chief Michael DeLeo said. “With many people travelling during the holidays, we encourage everyone to be a good neighbor, be aware of your surroundings and report suspicious activity.”
In addition to the cardboard-only receptacles, Tom Brown Park and San Luis Mission Park, as well as Myers Park and the Four Points by Sheraton, are drop-off points for your live-cut Christmas tree. You can also recycle your Christmas tree by placing it at the curb on your scheduled yard waste collection day. Customers are reminded to separate yard waste piles from any bulky items set out for pickup. Whatever way you choose to recycle it, please remember to remove all decorations first!
