Solar Power for Tallahassee is on the Horizon
April 06, 2017
Yesterday, the City Commission received an update on the City of Tallahassee's solar farm project. Construction of a 20 megawatt (MW) facility, which will be located near the Tallahassee International Airport, will begin this spring. Once complete, it will be one of the largest solar farms in Florida, capable of producing 37 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity each year. That's enough solar energy to power 3,400 homes in the Capital City.
In January, the Commission directed staff to add a second solar farm, which will further increase solar production to 60 MW. The completion of both solar farms will ultimately produce more than 30 times the amount of solar energy being produced in Tallahassee today.
“We live in the sunshine state, so we should continue to harness clean energy from the sun,” City Commissioner Scott Maddox said. “With this expansion, our citizen owned utility is leading the charge for solar energy.”
City Utility customers will soon have the opportunity to participate in this innovative solar program, which will provide clean, renewable energy to homes and businesses throughout our community.
