City Projects Receive Local and Statewide Recognition

Projects honored include FAMU Way and the Smokey Hollow Commemoration

This past week, the City of Tallahassee hosted the American Public Works Association's (APWA) 2017 State Conference here in Tallahassee. Over 350 members of the organization were in attendance and were afforded the opportunity to enjoy the many benefits the Capital City has to offer.

Last night, the statewide conference culminated with the APWA’s annual award ceremony, during which the City of Tallahassee received top honors as the recipient of the 2017 Project of the Year Award - Transportation $5 million to $25 million for FAMU Way Phase 1. Blueprint Intergovernmental Agency was also jointly awarded in the same category for their Capital Cascades Trail contribution to the project.

Also last night, the Tallahassee Trust for Historic Preservation held its Preservation Awards banquet. Recognizing the City’s commitment to historic preservation, the City’s Old Electric Building received a Preservation Award. Additionally, the Smokey Hollow Commemoration and the Smokey Hollow Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS) were recognized for outstanding achievement in promoting a greater appreciation of our community’s historic resources and awarded Preservation Awards.

“These awards highlight what we in Tallahassee already know,” Mayor Andrew Gillum said. “Game-changing infrastructure projects like FAMU Way and projects that honor our rich history like Smokey Hollow continue to cement our city as one of the most livable in the nation.”

The APWA Florida is a statewide chapter of the American Public Works Association, an international educational and professional association of public agencies, private sector companies and individuals dedicated to providing high quality public works goods and services. APWA Florida Chapter represents a membership of over 1,400 individuals from all areas of Florida and Puerto Rico.
