Neighbors to Walk the Talk to Help Enhance Safety
Area Neighborhoods to Conduct Walk-Through Assessment
October 26, 2017
This Saturday, residents in the Griffin Heights and Greater Frenchtown neighborhoods will take an active role in assessing and enhancing their neighborhoods as part of the Neighborhood Public Safety Initiative (NPSI). This citizen-based initiative seeks to improve public safety by engaging neighbors in efforts related to crime prevention and education, neighborhood beautification and community empowerment and volunteerism.
As part of the program, the neighborhood walk-through and assessment will be held in the Griffin Heights and Greater Frenchtown neighborhoods on Saturday, October 28, starting at 8:30 a.m. The event will kick off at Griffin Middle School, located at 800 Alabama Street. Working in small groups, volunteers will conduct assessments, which includes walking a block and collecting information about the neighborhood's assets and amenities, making notes of properties in need of repair and opportunities for neighborhood beautification. Additionally, items that need attention, such as potholes or sidewalk issues will be noted in the overall assessment.
To assist residents in this endeavor, members of civic groups and high school/college students have been invited to participate. Additional information about volunteer opportunities can be found at Talgov.com/NPSI.
NPSI provides participating neighborhoods with tools to better protect their homes and safely report suspicious activity. Efforts range from establishing a neighborhood crime watch to conducting property safety assessments. Community beautification efforts, including code enforcement assessments and education, will not only improve the look of participating neighborhoods but can also deter crime. Through neighborhood volunteerism, such as clean-up days and youth empowerment programs, residents are more engaged in their community and can positively impact the quality of life for their neighbors.
NPSI was recently launched by members of the local Public Safety Collective, which includes the Tallahassee Police Department, United States Attorney's Office, the State Attorney's Office, Leon County Sheriff's Office, FSU Police Department, FAMU Police Department, TCC Police Department, Big Bend Crime Stoppers and the Tallahassee Fire Department. The initiative is also supported by several City of Tallahassee Departments including Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Affairs, Growth Management and Community Beautification and Waste Management.
