City Closes out FY17 Budget
FY18 Budget Available on Talgov.com
December 13, 2017
The City of Tallahassee has closed out the Fiscal Year 2017 (FY17) budget. The FY17 budget process resulted in a $3 million reduction in taxes due to City Commission actions to reduce the property tax rate and to eliminate the City’s business tax.
Despite the reduction in taxes, there was no reduction in City services. In fact, the City has added 54 positions within the Tallahassee Police Department over the last three years and increased funding for technology and equipment upgrades aimed at reducing crime. This commitment to maintaining and enhancing services in the face of reduced revenue was achieved through streamlining processes, attention to expense control (contract management, etc.) and other work flow improvements.
The FY18 budget is available online at Talgov.com. As approved by the City Commission at its September 27 meeting, the $907 million FY18 budget aims to ensure the City continues providing high quality services at an affordable cost while meeting the stated needs of the community, such as public safety and infrastructure improvements. To help safeguard a balanced budget during FY18, the approved budget incorporates reductions resulting from re-organizations, added efficiencies and a decrease in the number of full time positions. Controlling expenditures now enables services to be responsive to changing circumstances, ensuring a year-end balanced budget.
Residents are encouraged to review the FY18 budget. Information about the City’s financials is always available through OpenGov and the City’s online budget, both accessible through Talgov.com.
Additionally, there are 10 budget discussions currently slated for the coming year, which include updates on FY18 at City Commission meetings, as well as budget focused workshops and community meetings to help craft the FY19 budget. The FY18 first quarter budget update will be provided on February 28, 2018.
