New Traffic Signals Coming to Tallahassee
Flashing Yellow Arrows Aim to Increase Safety along Park Avenue
January 04, 2018
Soon, motorists will notice a new type of traffic signal at select intersections in Tallahassee. To make roadways safer and more efficient, the City of Tallahassee will install flashing yellow arrow (FYA) traffic signals on Sunday, Jan. 7 and 14. The first FYA traffic signals will be installed along Park Avenue at key intersections, including Richview Road, Victory Garden Drive and Reece Park Lane.
Studies by the Federal Highway Administration have shown the flashing yellow arrows can help reduce left-turn crashes by as much as 35 percent. In addition to enhanced safety, the national study found that flashing yellow arrows are easier to understand than the traditional yield-on-green indicators, which are represented by a solid green circle. The new FYA traffic signals will also provide traffic engineers with more options to handle variable traffic volumes, saving motorists time and fuel.
Motorists approaching a flashing yellow arrow traffic signal for the first time should proceed with caution. For information on how a FYA traffic signal works, simply follow this link.
Ahead of the installation, variable message boards will alert motorists of the impending change. Additionally, City “street teams” will distribute information to motorists on Friday, Jan. 5 and 12, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the intersections along Park Avenue.
The City will continue to keep citizens updated in the future as additional flashing yellow arrow traffic signal installations occur.
The City of Tallahassee operates 354 signalized intersections spread throughout Tallahassee. In fall 2016, staff completed a system-wide traffic signal controller upgrade, bringing all 354 signalized intersections up-to-date. For more information, visit Talgov.com/Traffic.
