TPD Testing Body-Worn Cameras
Six Officers to Test New Technology
April 13, 2018
On April 12, 2018, the Tallahassee Police Department initiated a trial period, which will run for a minimum of 30-days, for the testing and evaluation of police officer body-worn cameras. This is the next step toward TPD issuing body-worn cameras to all sworn members. The cameras are intended to increase transparency, improve our relationship with the community, capture evidentiary footage, and show firsthand the dangers our officers face on a daily basis.
Six TPD officers will be wearing “Axon” body-worn cameras, during their normal duty assignments, to conduct testing and evaluation on the equipment and associated digital processes. These officers have undergone several hours of training by “Axon” to prepare them for using the cameras in public.
Citizens should understand officers are not required to inform them when they are being recorded, but the cameras should be in plain view affixed to the officer’s shoulder or collar. Officers will not have the ability to show community members any video footage. Anyone who wishes to review body-camera footage are asked to email tpdpublicrecords@talgov.com, and TPD will process the request in accordance with applicable public records laws.
TPD will continue to provide detailed and updated information, pertaining to our progress in issuing our officers body-worn cameras, to the community through press releases, social media releases, community meetings, and various other methods.
