Tallahassee Named Silver Level Bicycle Friendly Community
Celebratory Bike Ride and Recognition Ceremony to be Held Tonight
May 31, 2018
To mark the end of National Bike Month, the League of American Bicyclists (League) announced this morning that Tallahassee has earned the coveted Silver Level Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) designation. This award recognizes communities for actively supporting bicycling by providing safe accommodations and encouraging community members to bike for recreation and transportation. Tallahassee is one of only seven Florida communities to receive the Silver Level Bicycle Friendly Community designation.
In 2009, the League designated Tallahassee as a Bronze Level Bicycle Friendly Community. This status was reaffirmed in 2013. Enhancements over the past few years, such as bike corrals, bike boxes, protected bike lanes, sharrows and the new Pace Bike Share program, led the League to reconsider Tallahassee’s standing.
“Getting around our beautiful and vibrant city on two wheels has never been easier,” Mayor Pro Tem Curtis Richardson said. “We remain committed to making our city safe for all modes of transportation and appreciate that our efforts are being recognized by the League of American Bicyclists with this Silver Level designation.”
To celebrate the newly minted designation, a Celebratory Bike Ride and Recognition Ceremony will take place tonight, May 31, in conjunction with the Southside Farmers Market. The public is invited to attend.
The Celebratory Bike Ride will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Anita Favors Thompson Plaza at Lake Anita (under the Duval Street overpass at FAMU Way and S. Adams Street). Tallahassee-Leon County Planning Department staff will lead cyclists on a two-mile ride that will end at the Southside Farmers Market at the Walker-Ford Community Center, 2301 Pasco Street. The ride should take about 20 minutes.
Cyclists do not have to bring their own bike to participate in the Celebratory Bike Ride. A Pace Bike Share rack is conveniently located on the plaza near Lake Anita. Here, cyclists can unlock a bike at the touch of a button and begin rolling in seconds. To learn more about Pace and to download the free app, visit the App Store or Google Play.
The Recognition Ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. at the Southside Farmers Market. During the ceremony, City officials and local bicyclists will unveil a new sign baring the Silver Level Bicycle Friendly Community designation.
The Tallahassee-Leon County Planning Department is a joint department of the City of Tallahassee and Leon County. It is responsible for land use, zoning, mobility planning and more. For more information, please visit Talgov.com/planning.
