TPD Makes Arrest After Altercation Leads to Kidnapping and Aggravated Assault
June 11, 2018
On Saturday, June 9, 2018 at 4:04 a.m., TPD patrol officers responded to a call at Walmart, 3535 Apalachee Parkway, regarding a male and female in an altercation. As officers arrived on scene, they observed a white sedan leaving the parking lot, traveling at a high rate of speed. The first officer on scene was able to determine the white sedan was involved in the altercation and another officer, Officer E. Smith, was able to locate the vehicle at Sutor Road and Rockbrook Drive. Officer Smith observed a male and female outside the vehicle arguing. Upon sight of the officer, the female ran immediately to Officer Smith for help stating the male, identified as Robert Norton, was hurting her. Mr. Norton got into the white sedan and drove toward Officer Smith and the female victim. Fearing for her life and the victim’s life, Officer Smith was able to push the female victim out of harm’s way. Officer Smith used her arms to push away from the accelerating vehicle to keep from getting run over by Mr. Norton, who continued to drive away.
Investigators from the Violent Crimes Unit were assigned the case and conducted a comprehensive investigation of the incident. Probable cause to arrest Mr. Norton was developed for battery and kidnapping regarding his actions with the female victim and for aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer for his actions toward Officer Smith. Mr. Norton was arrested hours later by investigators and transported to the Leon County Detention Facility for processing.
Investigators are continuing to follow up with the case and are asking anyone with information to please contact them at (850) 891-4200 or if they choose to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers at (850) 574-TIPS.
