Crews Make Progress as Recovery Process Continues
Goal Set to Reach 90 Percent Restoration by End of Weekend Post Hurricane Michael
October 12, 2018
On the second day of restoration following Hurricane Michael, the worst storm to ever hit our region, progress is being made on recovery efforts in the City of Tallahassee. As of this morning, service has been restored to 25,000 customers. Repairs to the transmission system are 50 percent complete; this portion of the restoration process is expected to be 100 percent complete by the end of the day. This will help return power to substations and subsequently to neighborhood distribution lines.
More than 800 restoration personnel are working in the field, with crews assigned to every substation in the community. The goal is to reach 90 percent restoration by the end of the weekend.
To achieve this goal, crews must be able to move efficiently and safely on our roads. To that end, all major roadways are now passable, and all critical intersections are operational. Road clearing began in neighborhoods yesterday. This will help responders, but it will also help residents reach needed supplies, begin returning to work and school, and connect with friends and family.
The recovery process takes time, but with fall temperatures here, there are many opportunities for residents to find respite and fun while crews continue restoration work. The City has opened comfort stations, which are open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Currently, sites include the Trousdell Center, 298 John Knox Blvd. and Lincoln Center, 438 Brevard Street. On Saturday night, bring the entire family out to Cascades Park to enjoy a showing of A Wrinkle in Time and offerings from local food trucks. Movie starts at 7 p.m.
To help meet the holistic needs of the community, the City is partnering with Greater Mount Zion Primitive Baptist Church and Flipper Chapel AME to host a community meal today at 2 p.m. at 819 Saxon Street. Another meal will be provided in partnership with New Hope International Outreach, 3426 Crawfordville Road, tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 13, at 2 p.m.
The City’s water utility is functioning normally and continues to offer high quality water. Bottled water is available for those in need though at ten locations:
- Fire Station 1, 327 Adams Street
- Fire Station 2, 2805 Sharer Road
- Fire Station 3, 3005 S. Monroe Street
- Fire Station 4, 2899 W. Pensacola Street
- Fire Station 15, 1445 Bannerman Road
- Fort Braden Community Center, 16387 Blountstown Highway
- Apalachee Regional Park, 7550 Apalachee Parkway
- Woodville Park and Recreation Complex, 1398 Black Forest Road
- Concord School, 15011 Cromarite Road
- Fred George Greenway, 3043 NW Capital Circle
Together, our community will recover and grow stronger. Additional updates about Hurricane Michael response and recovery efforts will be posted on Talgov.com.
