Build Bridges One Neighbor at a Time
Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Events Announced
January 15, 2019
"We have flown the air like birds and swum the sea like fishes but have yet to learn the simple act of walking the earth like brothers," Martin Luther King Jr. said. To help residents build stronger personal connections, the City of Tallahassee will again host the annual Day of Dialogue event on Monday, Jan. 21, from noon to 2 p.m. at Cascades Park on Centennial Field (near Monroe Street). This year's theme is "Building Bridges One Neighbor at a Time."
"Dr. King implored us all to look beyond the surface and see the humanity in every person we encounter," Mayor John Dailey said. "This event provides residents an opportunity to connect and communicate, building the bridges that will ultimately make us stronger as individuals and a community."
The Day of Dialogue enables citizens from throughout the community to come together and engage in conversation about human relations. As part of the free event, there will be a thought-provoking panel discussion headed by the Tallahassee Human Relations Council and a roundtable discussion that focuses on the ways Tallahasseeans can continue to have conversations across differences.
The seventh annual MLK Dare to Dream festival, which is presented by the Martin Luther King Jr. Dare to Dream Association Inc., will be held the same day from 12-4 p.m. in Cascades Park, 1001 S. Gadsden St. There will be musical performances by various artists and a Celebrity DJ Battle. The festival will also feature an MLK Birthday Bash for kids, a variety of specialty item and food vendors, a community service project and a historical exhibit.
Prior to the events in Cascades Park, the NAACP will host its annual MLK Remembrance Walk from 9-10:30 a.m. The walk begins in C.K. Steele Plaza, 111 W. Tennessee St., and ends at the Capitol.
