UPDATE - March 2
In the interest of the participant safety and due to the conditions of the track and field, the Torch Run, fun run/walk and all track and field competitions have been cancelled for Saturday, March 2. Event organizers will make every effort to reschedule these events. Updates will be provided soon.
Seniors are going for the gold in the 10th annual Capital City Senior Games. Tomorrow, March 1, the games begin, showcasing the diverse fitness talents of nearly 500 local seniors in archery, bag toss, basketball, bowling, cycling, golf, horseshoes, pickleball, power lifting, racquetball, swimming, table tennis, tennis, track and field, water aerobics and a one-mile fun run/walk.
Presented by the City of Tallahassee’s Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Affairs (PRNA) department and led by the Senior Services division, the annual Capital City Senior Games aim to keep Tallahassee’s senior population active and healthy.
In true Olympic fashion, the lighting of a torch will signify the start of this year’s games. The Torch Run will take place on Saturday, March 2, at 9 a.m. at the Godby High School track, located at 1717 W. Tharpe Street. All are invited to cheer and walk along with the ceremonial torch as it is lit by City Commissioner Dianne Williams-Cox and carried by competing athletes around the track. The one-mile fun run/walk and track and field competitions will take place immediately after the Torch Run.
Individuals 50 years and older who want to participate in the Capital City Senior Games can sign up in person or online. Registration forms are available for completion at the Tallahassee Senior Center, located at 1400 N. Monroe Street, and at the PRNA office, located at 912 Myers Park Drive. Registration deadlines take place two days before competitions. For specific dates, times and locations for each competition and to register online, please visit Talgov.com/Seniors.
Registration begins at $15 for one event and includes a T-Shirt and dinner ticket for the athlete and a guest to the Celebration of Athletes event scheduled for Monday, March 11, at 5:30 p.m. at the Senior Center. Registration for each additional event will cost $3. The Celebration of Athletes event serves as the closing ceremonies for the Senior Games.
For those who would rather help versus compete, volunteers are still needed to assist with the games. If you’re interested in encouraging the archers, high jumpers, swimmers and the like as they compete for a chance to win a medal, then email cheri.howe@talgov.com or call 891-3866.
The Senior Games are certified by the Florida Sports Foundation and give local athletes a chance to qualify for the Florida Senior Games State Championships and the National Senior Games.
