Suspect in Shooting Apprehended Swiftly by TPD
June 28, 2020
At approximately 1 a.m. on Sunday, June 28, in the 100 block of Glenview Drive, the Tallahassee Police Department responded to a call in reference to an adult female who had been shot in the upper chest. Officers on routine patrol had heard possible gunshots and were already proactively headed toward the area when the call came in. They quickly located the victim and rendered first aid until the arrival of the ambulance. The victim is expected to recover.
A description of the suspect and the suspect’s vehicle was provided to the officers, and shortly afterward, the suspect vehicle was seen at the intersection of South Adams Street and Osceola Street. Knowing an armed suspect was most likely in the vehicle, backup was called, while the officer trailed the vehicle. After several blocks, the suspect vehicle accelerated to an extremely high rate of speed while northbound along Jim Lee Road, which is mostly residential. Officers activated lights and sirens at this time and attempted to stop the vehicle. The vehicle did not stop, and a pursuit ensued. Officers lost sight of the vehicle along Magnolia Drive, which ended the pursuit.
The car was again quickly located in the area of James Street and Coleman Street. When the suspect attempted to flee again, the vehicle collided with a marked police vehicle head-on, injuring the officer who was driving.
Despite the violent circumstances of this incident, officers swiftly and safely took the suspect into custody at 1:22 a.m. without incident or further harm to the community.
Both the injured officer and the suspect, who was the passenger in the vehicle, were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries from the crash. Both have since been released.
The suspect has been identified as Gariah Jones and is being charged with Attempted Murder.
The driver of the vehicle fled on foot and has not yet been apprehended.
Although an arrest has been made, elements of this case are still open and active.
