City Builds Up Affordable Housing with Construction of New Homes
August 04, 2020
Today, the City of Tallahassee and Big Bend Habitat for Humanity marked the beginning of construction for three affordable housing units. The homes are expected to be complete by the end of the year. This will bring the City’s total number of Habitat home builds to 11, each providing a safe, affordable place to live for local families.
“Everyone deserves a place to call home,” Tallahassee Mayor John Dailey said. “Through our partnership with Big Bend Habitat for Humanity, we are providing Tallahassee families with the opportunities and many benefits that come with affordable home-ownership.”
In support of its strategic priority to reduce the impacts of poverty in the community, the Tallahassee City Commission voted earlier this year to sponsor the construction of three Big Bend Habitat for Humanity homes. That sponsorship includes financial support in the amount of $195,000 from the City’s Affordable Housing Trust Fund, the donation of three City-owned land parcels and volunteered manpower provided by City employees.
Alongside other volunteers with Big Bend Habitat for Humanity, City employees will participate in every stage of construction – from literally raising the roof to laying sod and moving in furniture.
“With the City Commission’s leadership and support from City of Tallahassee employees who work at every level of the organization, three deserving families will call these soon-to-be-constructed houses their homes,” Antoine Wright, Big Bend Habitat for Humanity executive director said. “Through its partnership with Big Bend Habitat for Humanity, the City has already built eight homes in just over three years to support local families in our community.”
Big Bend Habitat for Humanity provides affordable homeownership to low-income persons. The Habitat for Humanity model allows for groups and individuals to sponsor homes through financial contributions and pledges of volunteer labor. Individuals who acquire a home through Habitat for Humanity must in turn provide volunteer labor for other homes built by the organization.
